Take a virtual look through the room with the
12 washbacks of Glenfarclas, each holding 45000 liters. Originally made
of Oregon pine, distilleries are now starting to use metal as they are
far easier to clean. As this is the step where yeast is added to ferment
the sugars into alcohol, it is very important the washbacks are thoroughly
cleaned after each use as the bacteria left might kill the yeast and thus
reduce the amount of alcohol yielded. Metal washbacks make the cleaning
process much easier.
