27 March '08 - Uproar over SWA actions
You might have heard it already, or maybe not. The SWA is trying to get the much debated term blended malt whisky into legislation replacing the current term vatted malt whisky.
Consensus amongst small (independent) producers and consumers is that it will create confusion about the product.
Here you will find a thread discussing the issue on the PeatFreak forum, including a link to an online petition opposing the legislation.

16 March '08 - Updated News feeds
Updated the Whisky News & Blogs page. Bruichladdich's blog disappeared, and The Scotsman changed their setup. There are still three blogs that use a non-standard RSS feed so its hard for me to get that working here.

Congratulations, I'll contact you over a private forum message soon for your address so your personalized copy can be sent to you a.s.a.p.!
Finally, a cracking Christmas and a good year of the Rat to everyone!

02 December '07 - New Contest: Personalized Autographed copy of the Whisky Bible 2008
The Whisky Bible is one of the steady factors when it comes to collections of tasting notes. Edition 2008 follows the same format of former editions; alphabetically ordered you will find thousands of descriptions of what seems like every expression available for any distillery. With an eye for detail Jim Murray even describes expressions marketed under the same name but identifiable by small differences on the label.
The guide has a handy format so it can be carried along in your back pocket when you go out shopping for a malt or taken with you to a nosing & tasting. About its size, since the last edition I have available the thickness increased a lot. On the cover the reason becomes clear, this new version includes 925 new or updated entries. Not trying to fill a page a distillery (or expression) Jim Murray writes what he thinks about a expression and leaves the pretty layouts to others. Notes can be anything from half a page to a single line if that captured the expression well.
You might not really see the guide as a book, but as a reference book instead. Aside from a few articles in the beginning of the book (award winners 2008, whisky year in review, how to use the guide) there are no articles on whisky production or other topics that are not directly related to the main subject of the book: tasting notes. As a guide, you may find it very desirable to carry it with you to shops and nosing & tasting sessions.
As with many issues in the whisky industry scoring whisky is also under heavy debate. Some use scoring themselves, other refuse too. Jim Murray uses a system to score the nose, taste, finish and balance separately. For each part a maximum of 25 points can be given, which are printed separately with each note in the book in addition to the sum making the total score. However, if you dislike scoring, there is still the description of the whisky itself, where necessary split up in the fields mentioned above.
If you want to lay your hands on a personalized autographed copy you're on the right website! We have one to give away in a contest. Want to enter? Then submit a tasting note into the new Tasting Notes section on the forum either directly or by using the free tasting notes program and you might become the lucky winner!
The contest will run until December the 23rd, and as with the previous contest my son will draw the winner. Good luck!
