The Ben Nevis distillery is situated a bit out of Fort
William. The buildings look somewhat industrialized, and not much breathes
the look and feel of a 'traditional distillery'.
Before the tour starts we got to see a video hosted by MacDram, which
follows the stereotype of a fierce highlander very closely. Fun, with
some nice video footage of the landscape, but not really adding any knowledge.
The tour itself was a bit boring. Questions were left unanswered by our
guide, who quickly added that he does not actually drink whisky himself!
He would pass the questions on to the manager however, who was indeed
later at the end of the tour more then helpful to answer any questions
left.
A
welcome change compared too most other tours is that you can photograph
in the production area's to your hearts content, no worries about flammable
fumes on the foot of Great Britain's highest mountain...
I am not too sure whether whisky novices will have learned anything from
this tour if they chose Ben Nevis as their first tour, but nonetheless
it's worth to take a tour here if you are in the Fort William area.
If you need some tips for other activities: if you are a keen hiker then
you can't really miss out on climbing the Ben Nevis. Be sure to pick a
clear day however! We got lucky to pick the single clear day out of an
average 7 cloudy days. But if you do, the view from the top is amazing.
Leave EARLY (we started hiking from the campsite at 7.00AM) so you are
well ahead of the herds of others who will do the same that day. Also
Glen Nevis 'behind' the Ben is hiker heaven. At all times doing such activities
please ensure you know about mountain safety, wear proper hiking shoes,
carry enough water and food, and bring a sweater and a wind jacket, even
on a warm and clear summer day!
