Another distillery you definitely can't
pass while you are on Islay. And if your one of the proud land owners
you of course have to visit to collect your annual rent!
The tour described here was done early 2004 when former warehouseman Jack
just took on the job of tour guide. Jack is the type of guy with a lot
of hands-on experience in the distillery itself, and is full of hospitality
and humor. A great asset to the visitor center and I am sure he does a
great job of promoting the brand to the visitors.
When we did this tour they were just building a museum on the bottom floor
of the maltings. Lot of progress has yet to be made, but what was on display
promises a lot, so we will have to come back here as well when all is
finished!
Laphroaig is one of the distilleries left that partly malt its own barley.
Be there when they are producing and you can also have a peek into a working
kiln, a rare sight for the average distillery tour.
An impressive array of stills can be seen in the stillroom, and the tour
finishes in the warehouse right on the shore. A terrific tour we still
have fond memories off. And the best of all is that the tour is free!
