Distillery Visits: Glenkinchie

What We Thought Of Our Tour

map - distillery website - VR Distillery

Glenkinchie is the lowland representative in Diageo's Classic Malts series. Popularly called 'the Edinburgh malt' it is actually located in Pencaitland which is a convenient ride from the Scottish capital. Unlike what you might expect, the 'ch' of the name is not pronounced as the ch from the Scottish word loch. It is derived from 'de Quincey' who were landowners of this place.

As all Classic Malt distillery tours we conducted, this tour is also very solid. Before the tour starts you can spend some time in the museum build on the old malting floors. There is quite a lot to see here, so plan in some time! One of the items on display is the famous scale model of a complete distillery build by James Risk in 1924 for a exhibition.

As expected, the tour is a solid one. Our guide knows what he is talking about, and we have all the time to look around, and answer questions. We are also allowed to photograph inside the production area.

We end the tour in the tasting room where our dram does not end with a dram of Glenkinchie, but instead we are offered several, and we discuss the malts with the guide.

The tasting alone makes this distillery worth a visit. As does teh miniature distillery (wich is fully operational if need be!). If you happen to be with a group: book in advance and come around luchtime. It's possible to have a lunch arranged for groups: And out of personal experience i can tell you: it's splendid!
