On a scale for cuteness from 1 to 100 this distillery
scores 110. Several small building are scattered left and right of a road
going up in a small glen which end up at a small warehouse. The tour is
free, not something you see a lot anymore. There are quite a few guides
around, as this distillery is getting a lot of tourists, maybe due to
being so close to Pitlochry, the tourist center of the highlands.
The tour itself starts with a dram and a introductory video. When we move
to the production site we can see our first treat; a open worm condenser
which curls down from behind the still room. Not a common sight on distilleries
anymore. And the eye candy does not really stop there. The whole distillery
is basically in one building, tightly packed together. Maybe this is the
reason why the stills are so small too, they are the smallest I have ever
seen! Also
on the 1st floor we can find a Morton Refrigerator, which is one of the
last who still survived. It is a large open box which cools the wort by
streaming cool water against the flow of the wort. This definitely a tour
you must not miss. Just be very aware of how many people visit this distillery,
so get there early, and book in advance in the busy periods.
Some tips for this area have been covered in the Blair Athol distillery
visit already, but a specific tip for Edradour would be instead of taking
the car to the site is to take the walk from Pitlochry up through the
woods. You'll pass through a beautiful wood and a waterfall and end up
right in front of the distillery, can't be better!
