Distillery Visits: Bowmore

What We Thought Of Our Tour

map - distillery website - VR Distillery

Bowmore is the capital of Islay and also the home of this single malt distillery. The white washed buildings are located right along the shore where we can have a lovely view off from the pier. A most famous view you must have seen in many photographs.

The tour starts from the shop where a lot of related articles are for sale. Aside the nectar itself there is a collection of clothing and books on sale.

Bowmore is the second distillery on Islay where you can see a working malting floor. There is nothing better then seeing a distillery who can show the entire production process, even though we realize it can only do a portion of the required malt itself.

The distillery is very accessible, a welcome delight as many distilleries never have been build with visitors in mind, so all rooms can be looked upon well. Also photography is allowed, so it is quite easy to make some good photo's without other tour members in the view.

Bowmore also solved the problem with the warehouse well. Many tours don't include a visit to the warehouse because customs and excise restrict access to it, at Bowmore there is a room with glass windows which allows the visitors to take a view into the warehouse, excellent! Even the angel's share is not missing here.

Even if you have little time to spend in Bowmore: do not forget to walk up the road to the round church, round so the devil has no corners to hide in!
