Aberfeldy is another single malt distillery which is
being used as the tourists headquarters of a famous blend, in this case
Dewar's. The distillery is located on the border of Aberfeldy. Most of
the building are in a traditional style and only the new stillhouse kind
a looks 'slapped on'.
You enter the visitor center in the shop. Amongst Aberfeldy malt and Dewar's
blend products you can also find other products from distilleries owned
by the same group, such as Craigellachie. We took the deluxe tour, which
turned out to be the normal tour but more samples in the end and a glencairn
glass which could be picked up upon completing the tour.
The tour starts in a museum where you can learn about the history of the
distillery and the Dewar's blend. The museum is divided up in several
rooms where (interactive) displays will guide you through the history
of the distillery and the Dewar's blend. One of the rooms include a 'blender's
room' where you can interactively create your own blend. All very nicely
done and very entertaining.
Once
done you can proceed to the bar where you can sample the whisky. Here
are also small bottles which you can test your blender's nose with. You
can fill in a form and match common smells with the numbers on the nosing
bottles.
The tour that follows resembles all that you expect in a tour. On a easy
pace we are being guided through the distillery by a guide who seems to
be very knowledgable. The order is logical and easy to follow, and best
of all, you are allowed to make photographs in the production area's.
Not something you would expect in a distillery which sees a lot of visitors
in the buss periods.
Aberfeldy has a lot to offer to tourists, even though it is a bit in the
shadow of Pitlochry which is far more tourist (and busier). Definitely
do not skip out Glen Lyon, this must be one of the most beautiful glen's
in Scotland (and one of the longest). Also if you are a hiker there are
some great walks around this area. Also the Crannog Center is not too
be missed. It could be combined with a walk over the moor from Aberfeldy
in the morning, the center in the afternoon and the bus back to Aberfeldy
for a great day out.
