Article: A change at Glenturret

The Glenturret Distillery, also known as the oldest ‘legal’ distillery in Scotland (1775) has changed a lot during the last 2 years. During this large refurbishment the brand has also changed a little.

Since we all know by now that the regular range from The Glenturret is no longer produced (wich I have stated earlyer at various whisky sites), the people behind The Glenturret decided to come up with another range. Why? Quite simple the old range had to disappear, because of The Famous Grouse Experience. In December 2002 they have launched their first ‘vintage’a Glenturret 1972 to announce their newest range and this will vary from time to time. However they have one standard single malt whisky a Glenturret 10Y old and was released at the beginning of July. Also there has been released another ‘vintage’from Glenturret a 1980. The well known ‘Harrods’ in Londen has previously ordered 60 bottles of the latest Glenturret ‘vintage’ 1980, so there’s truely a market for it. Their are still two Glenturret ‘vintages’ waiting patiently to be bottled, those are The Glenturret 1977 and a 1987.

The tasting notes from the 10Y old will be shortly published. If we looking at the notes from the 1972 vintage, the character is sweet, ripe fruit and velvety. The 1977 however, is a reflection from the 1972 except the aroma’s and the flavor’s are much and much stronger and it has a creamy character. Anoter is the 1987 wich doesn’t remind you directly to a Glenturret whisky, It’s character is quite spicy, but still has a certain flowery-fruityness. But then take The Glenturret 1980, wich looks like a copy of the 1987. The flavor’s of the 1980 are much stronger as the 1987 and it is very spicy in character. All together they are great whiskies and the beauty of it is that they are so well balanced, that there’s is a choice for every ones palate. You might say: opposites attract.

Still, I know there are some connoisseurs who loved The Glenturret very much. For those I would say: hurry because there are some ages from the ‘old stock’ wich are very hard to find. Also notice that there might be in some shops a hard price tag on them. But don’t wait to long.
