Bruichladdich - The Sophisticated Islay Single malt

Many books are available that describe distilleries page after page these days. This however was not always the case. Before single malt whiskies became popular besides being used in blends, single malt distilleries have been documented badly.
With one exception however, in 1885 Alfred Barnard took up the challenge to visit all whisky distilleries in the UK, including sites in Scotland, Ireland and England. About a year later he completed this task and wrote a book that is both an excellent reference book as a book that reads like a traveling novel. Besides technical information Alfred Barnard describes the means of transport he used to get from distillery to distillery, the landscape, the people and also included poems describing the landscape or distillery he visited.

In this section of PeatFreak we will stick to the distilleries Barnard visited in Scotland. For the Irish distilleries visit the Celtic Spirit where the articles can be found describing those. And the English distilleries can be found at Eugene van der Meer's site. Also the preface and pages towards the end of the book where ads are displayed will not be included here.
Also the line drawings of the distilleries are included, as well as a photo of current times where applicable. As the book is scanned in using Optical Character Recognition techniques and the letter-type used in the book is of an older type some articles contain errors. Over time we will correct those, but you might understand this is a very time consuming task. We made a start with correcting the most obvious sections and all the poems. If you are in the need of a certain distillery and the text is too scrambled please contact us and we will give that distillery priority.

The following table shows the index to all distilleries Alfred Barnard described for Scotland in the order of his book. To get the list in alphabetical order, click here. The numbers and colors correspond with the numbers and colors on the map above, clicking those will enlarge the map for the section the distillery is in. The distillery names will open the page with the details as described by Alfred Barnard. If a distillery is spelled differently or has a different name altogether now it is written after Barnard's name enclosed in parentheses.
